Mental health conditions and treatments

Vague terms such as ‘stress’ (an individual’s experience of being under emotional pressure) and ‘anxiety’ (a feeling of unease, worry or fear) don’t do justice to the different ways in which an individual’s mental health can be affected.

Individuals may have a range of difficulties, from momentarily feeling under strain, having to recover their psychological balance, to needing specialist help for specific mental health conditions.

The Royal College of Psychiatrists is the main body for psychiatrists in the UK, where it is the voice of psychiatry. It sets professional standards and promotes excellence in treatment services. The College provides helpful information on mental health problems and guides on treatment and support.
